The decisive event that shaped my professional career did not happen during surgery and primary therapy, but during many years of caring for cancer patients alongside my clinical and therapeutic work. I was 30 and had been a senior consultant at an academic hospital in Bochum for just two years. There were always patients who were considered statistical outliers in terms of cancer survival. I wondered what had happened differently with them (and whether there was a parameter responsible for this at all). Without exception, these patients had learned to LIVE WITH cancer. They had all gone through the eye of their respective needles, which always consisted of the effects of traumatic conditioning of various causes. How the individual SURVIVES trauma and how the individual begins to LIVE when he or she resolves this conditioning, in a painful and challenging process, became the center around which my professional career revolved and continues to revolve today.
