When I first started teaching Somatic Experiencing (SE) in the 1970s, most of the people I worked with presented with single (or multiple) discrete traumas. And then, when I first wrote Waking the Tiger in 1992--- which was eventually published in 1996, it was primarily based on understanding the underlying physiology of these discrete traumas.
Now, during the past 55 years plus it has become increasingly obvious that the majority of people I saw were also suffering from attachment issues and, so-called, developmental trauma. So, as the work evolved it became clear that I had to work with the interlacing of shock and developmental trauma.
In this workshop, we will explore together how to navigate this delicate dance which requires therapists to understand, not only what happened to an individual, but also what didn’t happen, what was lacking as babies and small children. This requires a great deal of acute perception and an embracing presence or the part of the SE therapist.
