The human spine is unique in the world, as we are the only living beings on Earth whose spine is structured to stand completely upright. While there are other beeings that can stand on two legs and hold their heads above their feet, they can maintain this posture only for a short time. What sets us apart is the delicate balance of curves, structure, and pelvis—an architecture that allows us to bear weight while remaining flexible.
Our spine serves many functions. A healthy spine enables stability and movement in almost every direction, keeping us in balance. It is our communication hub and the most important link between the brain and the body. Through the autonomic nervous system, it is connected to all our organs. Thirty-one pairs of nerves branch off from it and transmit messages throughout the entire system. Misaligned or blocked vertebrae can disrupt this entire communication process. But the spine bears more than just physical weight. It reacts to what moves us—to stress, anxiety, overwhelm, and exhaustion. It reflects our inner experience and shapes our posture accordingly.
Living with gravity has shaped our entire lives from birth and led to the development of habits. Understanding how our spine works, how our emotional and mental state is reflected in it, what possibilities it offers, and which poor postures can lead to serious problems is a valuable resource—especially given our modern habit of sitting for hours on end or bending our heads forward to look at our smartphones.
Exploring the spine with the help of the Tuning Board opens up spaces for perception, understanding, and change. Structure and function become a living experience—in connection with movement, with ranges of motion, and with one’s own history. In this process, things can realign themselves. A more refined awareness emerges—of balance, of inner orientation, of the interplay between stability and movement. From this grows the possibility of reconnecting with a sense of center.
