The "Self", The "Other", and The "We":
Autonomy And Connectedness from A Neuroscientific Perspective

Prof. Dr. Joachim Bauer (DE)

Human newborns are precious beings provided with the full human dignity. They experience feelings, e. g. satisfaction or pain. However, they cannot (yet) call a "Self" their own. The brain region where the "Self Networks" will develop along the first months of life is biologically still immature at birth. So, how does the "Self" find its way into the infantile brain? The "Self" owes its emergence resonances happening between the infant and his or her attachment figures. Interpersonal resonances are not only of significance for the emergence of the "Self", but also for its preservation througout life.

Me – You – We in life and in spiritual development
Marianne Bentzen (DK)

Life requires a delicate skill of us. At the beginning of our lives, everything that we do is in the body, with the body – and done with others. Somehow, out of that process we develop a sense of ‘me’. Also, everything that the others do becomes part of how we expect the world to be in the future. This back-and-forth dialogue of me and you allows us to develop a sense of being-together, a sense of shared flow or WE – US. This We/Us feeling determines how love affairs develop, how culture develops and also how deeper spiritual meetings develop.

On this day, we will learn and practice some of the early steps in this developmental process, take a quick look at the cultural aspect and try one of the spiritual practices that rest on it.

From Oneness to Togetherness

As life progresses from conception, to gestation, to birth, infancy, toddlerhood, adolescence, and adulthood, we emerge, from the cocoon of oneness to the challenge of separateness, and then to individuation as adults. This stunning growth towards wholeness involves moving from the I – it relationship to the I – Thou one. In this experiential program, we will explore this transformation.
